ENERGY EFFICIENCY

My first house was sited for passive solar gain and had 2x6 walls; a new idea at the time. Insulation details have changed and are much improved, but siting a house for solar gain is an old, simple idea, which does not cost anything, but adds not only energy savings, but a very nice feel to have a house with lots a light that follows you during the day. Of course, not all sites are ideal for solar gain but the ideas that can be incorporated are worthwhile.

Position of the house on the lot has more to do than just solar gain. The neighborhood, views, septic systems, drainage, and recreation/gardening needs must also be considered. My preference when possible is to have the house kept as far to the north side of the lot allowing the view from the windows to see the main area of the lot and to keep the recreation area as one larger area rather than smaller areas on all sides of the house. This works well with garage/parking areas to the north side and away from play areas.
