ENERGY EFFICIENCY

These days there are so many energy ideas and green options, but the fundamental ideas are simple:

• Site and design the house for solar potential.

• Insulate and air seal as much as the budget (and common sense) allow.

• Provide options for future solar (hot water, photovoltaics) by siting properly, creating correct roof lines, and by providing conduits from attic to basement.

• Explore the heating, cooling and ventilating options. More insulation in the house and proper sizing can reduce the cost and complexity of heating systems and provide both short and long term benefits. I have used many different systems over the years, from wood stove heated super insulated houses with electric backup, hot water tanks that also heat the house, geo thermal systems with both open and closed loops, and hydro air systems with integrated energy recovery ventilators, radiant heat, and thermal mass wood heaters. All the systems have their benefits and many factors should be considered.
