Form follows function. I am not a fan of the multiple roof lines, dormers in truss roof systems, random trim and different sidings just to look fancy. My personal preference is modern in terms of light and clean lines, but with an older more traditional sense of proportions and respect for how the house weathers. The clean tight lines of modern houses with minimal trim often do not hold up to New England winters. In some houses and neighborhoods, having the garage door as the main architectural feature in the front of the house works well, but ideally I think the garage should be of to side and the house and entry be the feature that greets you. Front doors that are not naturally easy to get to and therefore not used make no sense to me and also waste interior space.
